Public PhD defence of Liselotte Vroman

Make Room for PLAY | Questioning the Role of the Moving Body between Thinking and Making.

The KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture kindly invites you to attend the public PhD defence of Liselotte Vroman.

Abstract:
This interdisciplinary research questions the role of the moving body in the design tools of architects and choreographers. It examines how these tools allow one to communicate and reflect on spatial experiences. These particular experiences are largely determined by the way how bodies moves through spaces.

Whereas architecture usually starts its creation process from a static position, dance originates from the moving body. Considering this difference, it is being explored how both disciplines could enrich each other in the creation process and offer insights to allow to think of more diverse experiences. Both disciplines are linked by three important basic components: body, movement and space. However, the relationship between these three elements is fundamentally different.

By actively experimenting within educational contexts and by entering into conversations with practitioners from both disciplines involved, this research creates insight into how discipline-specific design tools determine thinking about body, movement and space. These actions and conversations are brought together in an imaginary space – “the playground”. Through the construction of “the playground”, a space is created to accommodate an interdisciplinary discourse on body, movement and space.

This playground is at the same time a work in progress and invites active participation in order to be further expanded. By playing inside the playground, one is encouraged to reallocate its gaze and alter its role. Architects are also choreographers and choreographers are also architects.
